San Jose, Calif. (September 4, 2008)--Another 17 national titles were claimed Wednesday as day two of the 2008 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships awarded Stars-and-Stripes jerseys in 2,000- and 3,000-meter individual pursuits and points race contests.
 
In the only two age groups contesting the 3,000-meter distance, Devon Vigus (Richmond, Calif./Cal Giant Berry Farm) and Jason Sprouse (Asheville, N.C./Industry Nine) claimed national titles in their respective categories. Vigus won the men’s 30-34 category with a time of 3 minutes, 42.878 seconds, while Sprouse clocked a 3:33.899 in the men’s 35-39 class to earn his championship.
 
Racing over the 2,000-meter distance, Lawrence Nolan (Fremont, Calif./Specialized) earned his second national title of the week, this time in the pursuit. After winning the men’s 50-54 500-meter time trial on Tuesday, Nolan returned to the track on Wednesday to record a 2:24.665 and capture another Stars-and-Stripes jersey. 
 
Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn./Amgen-Giant) claimed a national title in the men’s 55-59 2,000-meter individual pursuit, clocking a winning time of 2:27.458.
 
In the men’s 60-64 2,000-meter time trial, John Elgart (Sacramento, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo) reigned victorious with a mark of 2:38.950.
 
And after winning a national title in the men’s 65-69 500-meter time trial a day earlier, Victor Copeland (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Team Specialized) rode to his second victory of the week with a win in his 2,000-meter pursuit, finishing with the fastest mark of 2:40.382.
 
In the final men’s pursuit, Bob Kaye (Wheelsport Cycling) won the 70+ category, stopping the clock at 2:50.366 over a distance of 2,000 meters.     
 
The 2008 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships also recognized eight women’s champions in the 2,000-meter individual pursuit. 
 
Jennifer Triplett (Seattle, Wash./Broadmark Capital) won the women’s 30-34 division in 2:37.003. In the 35-39 category, Deborah Kidd (Santa Fe, N.M./Hammer Racing) rode a 2:46.010 to claim the national title. Debbie Veitch (Stuart, Fla./Herbalife) won the 40-44 division in 2:46.900. Karen Brems (Redwood City, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo) claimed the 45-49 championship in 2:35.569.
 
Jane Rinard (Monona, Wis./Brazen Dropouts) claimed her second title of the week with a win in the 50-54 age group, clocking a 2:46.391 and adding a pursuit title to her 500-meter time trial crown.  
 
Other winners included Mary Allen (San Mateo, Calif./Webcor-Alto Velo) in the 55-59 age group with a winning mark of 2:59.659 and Marsha Macro (Littleton, Colo./Hammer Racing Team) in the women’s 60-64 category in 2:54.297.
 
After winning her 500-meter time trial contest, Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, Calif.) also added a second title with a victory in the 65+ time trial.
 
The championships also crowned two points race champions in Kevin Metcalfe (Specialized/Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and Brett Clare (Encinitas, Calif./Schroeder Iron). Metcalfe won the men’s 45-49 20-kilometer points race with 37 points, while Clare was crowned champion in the men’s 40-44 points race with 18 points.
